JoZee Records presents SOMETHING SHOCKING FROM THE STOCKING!: 19 MONSTROUS ROCK AND ROLL CHRISTMAS SONGS. The album features all-new and previously unreleased studio recordings of 18 bands, mostly from Southern California. The album was produced by Bob Lee and John Collinson of Santa Sabbath, who have been performing their Christmas-themed covers of Black Sabbath material for over a decade. “There’s something about the pagan roots of the holiday, that winter festival that everybody participated in, back in the old days, make it adaptable to heavy music,” says Lee.

“The idea is that we have to have this big party at the beginning of winter, right when things are about to get really tough. Winter will kill you if you don’t watch out. So what do you do, you have one day where everyone is in on it, and you draw the family and loved ones together, and make special food, and sing songs, and play games, and be nicer than usual to each other. It’s a ritual to restore your faith in humanity right when you’re about to need it most. Which, if you really listen to Sabbath lyrics, is not that different from what they’re saying.

“So when we do these Black Sabbath songs with lyrics about Santa Claus, there’s a humorous aspect to it, of course, but we’re also kind of not kidding. We really do want to spread joy at Christmas time, and rock music is our vehicle for doing that.”

The producers believe that any kind of music can be Christmas music, and have chosen a suitably wide variety of talents to join them in their quest to make the ultimate rock Christmas album. The Darts, Schitzophonics, Real Oh My, Kurt Stifle, The Magnet Hearts and Rufus Ringwald offer high-energy jolts of garage rock and power pop. Herbert, I See Hawks in LA, Insect Surfers and Double Naught Spy Car present four gleeful deconstructions of holiday classics, three of which are “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”. The Freeks and Black Widows offer two densely orchestrated, vividly cinematic instrumentals. Jon Wahl & the Amadans, John San Juan and Biblical Proof of UFOs give beautiful, languid songs that induce the feeling of suspended animation. And old-school So Cal punks the Rotters and deadbeats – surely two of the bands once considered “least likely to ever make a Christmas record” - appear with tracks that might cause their longtime listeners to raise an eyebrow, if not an entire forehead.

“We wanted to keep it primarily upbeat and hopeful, but everyone has that grumpy uncle who claims to hate Christmas but nevertheless shows up and has a great time, So, the Rotters and Kurt Stifle tracks should provide whatever spiritual balance is needed to make it feel like a real, live Christmas party. And then, the deadbeats track is something else, almost like one of those records you used to get where comic books are acted out as radio plays, until it turns into what is quite possibly the sickest rock Christmas song of all time. But, that’s how these particular people like to have fun at the holidays, and we decided to let them indulge themselves.”
